Adoption at MARL

By far, the most important work we do at MARL is finding our animals loving, life-long homes. Consequently, we strive to place our animals in homes that serve our animals' best interests. Our customers, potential pet owners, are encouraged to take their time meeting and revisiting with individual animals in our Adoption Center. This way, potential owners can decide whether their interest in adopting a pet is real and will last. Our in-depth knowledge of the animals aids us in working closely with customers to find that special match of person and pet.

Things to consider when adopting

  • Is everyone in the household aware that you are looking for a pet?
  • Does anyone have any allergies to pets?
  • Do you agree to select a dog/cat based upon a “good fit” for both your household and the animal?
  • Can you provide regular medical care for your pet?
  • Does your household budget allow $250-$350 per year for routine medical visits?
  • Are you familiar with heartworm and heartworm prevention?
  • How do you feel about crating?
  • How will you housetrain your dog?
  • How will you handle destructive behavior?
  • What would you consider unacceptable behavior in your home?
  • For what reason would you consider giving up your pet?
  • What will you do with your pets when you go on vacation?
  • What would you do with your pet if you had to move?
  • Would you consider taking your dog to obedience class?
  • Are you aware that cats can live to be 20 years old and dogs 15 years old and are you willing to make a commitment to this animal for that length of time?
  • Rescue animals need time to adjust in your home, are you willing to make this commitment?
  • Would you object from someone from MARL coming to your home and checking on the animal?
