Welcome to Michigan Animal Rescue League (MARL), a non-profit organization that has played a vital role in the Pontiac community since 1951. MARL's mission is to shelter cats and dogs found as strays or surrendered by their owners, rehabilitate them in a stable, nurturing environment, and then find the best adoptive homes for them. MARL also reaches out to help many animals in the community who are enduring hardships in their permanent homes. We provide our "residents" with the right foods, safe and comforting surroundings, socialization and training, daily exercise, and medical care.
MARL does not euthanize animals unless injury, disease, or temperament makes placement impossible, nor do we sell animals for research. Instead, we strive to place our rescued animals into loving, permanent homes. Fortunately, MARL has been very successful in its mission. Every year we place 900 to 1,000 cats and dogs with caring owners, and we do it all without the aid of city, state, or federal funding.
At any given time, MARL houses between 100 to 120 cats, kittens, dogs, and puppies. Most animals are available for adoption, while others are permanent (and adored) residents of the shelter. Some animals come to us recovering from injury, trauma, or emotional distress. Each receives appropriate medical care upon arrival, including vaccinations, testing for Heartworm or FELV/FIV, and sterilization.
During rehabilitation at MARL, we spend time befriending the animals and working with them to determine their special needs. By the time one of our cats or dogs is ready for placement, we know whether it will get along with children, be willing to share a home with other companion animals, or require careful adoption placement for various reasons.
